Effective reading instruction DSE's Reading and Language Intervention for Children with Down Syndrome (RLI) is an evidence-based programme designed to teach reading and language skills to children with Down syndrome. RLI incorporates best practice in structured activities delivered in fast-paced daily teaching sessions. It was evaluated in a randomised controlled trial and found to improve rates of progress compared to ordinary teaching. This event is aimed at parents and educators interested in learning more about RLI. It offers an introduction to the new teaching programme, describing how it was designed and evaluated, who it is for, what is involved in delivering it, and what resources are available to support its use. Supporting speech development See and Learn Speech is an evidence-based intervention programme designed to help children with Down syndrome develop clearer speech by learning to hear the differences between sounds, learning to say individual sounds, practising simple sound combinations and saying whole words and phrases. This event introduces the programme, beginning with summary of what is understood about the children's speech difficulties and effective therapy approaches. Getting started with RLI This event is aimed at educators who have purchased the RLI handbook and are seeking additional support getting started with the reading and language intervention. It steps through the initial preparation and assessments required ahead of starting the daily teaching sessions. The event lasts 60 minutes, including 20 minutes for live questions from participants. Topics covered during the presentation include: • Planning and preparation • Grading books • Initial assessments • Supporting beginning readers Find out more... Teaching early language and reading Many children with Down syndrome experience particular difficulties learning spoken language skills. Additional support in the early years incorporating teaching approaches that offer visual representations of language can be particularly beneficial for young children with Down syndrome. See and Learn Language and Reading is designed by leading experts in education and development for children with Down syndrome. It helps families and professionals to provide additional support and encourage regular practice of early language skills for young children aged 15 months and older. This event provides a brief introduction to language learning for children with Down syndrome and explains how DSE's See and Learn Language and Reading programme can support early language teaching. The evidence underpinning the design of the programme is discussed.
