50 Countries Unite To Fight Medical Discrimination Against People With Down Syndrome

3/21 marks World Down Syndrome Day, giving advocates the opportunity to celebrate the lives of people with the condition, and also to push for equal treatment in every area of life.
This year, the awareness campaign is focusing its efforts on urging countries worldwide to provide adequate health care to people with Down syndrome.
People with Down syndrome typically have an increased risk for some medical conditions, including congenital heart defects, respiratory and hearing problems and Alzheimer's disease, according to the National Down Syndrome Society. While many of these conditions are treatable, and people with Down syndrome can live long and healthy lives, they still face elements of discrimination that interfere with their treatment.
According to Down Syndrome International, people with Down syndrome are often denied or delayed access to health care. They sometimes receive incorrect diagnoses due to their physician’s lack of knowledge or inadequate training, and are often excluded from the treatment plan process and making medical decisions.

Down Syndrome International is delighted to announce that the 3rd World Down Syndrome Day Conference, based on the theme "Health and Wellbeing - Access and Equality for All" will take place at United Nations Headquarters in New York, USA on 21 March 2014 in the Economic and Social Council Chamber from 1.30pm-6pm.

The 11th World Down Syndrome Congress (WDSC) 8/14-8/18
The 11th World Down Syndrome Congress (WDSC) is finally upon us (14-18 August 2012) and for the first time in 2012 you can join us from the comfort of your computer screens by taking part in the WDSC SOCIAL MEDIA PROJECT.

International Petition for the Adoption of World Down Syndrome Day as a United Nations Observance Day from 21 March 2012
DSi launches "International Petition for the Adoption of World Down Syndrome Day as a United Nations Observance Day from 21 March 2012"

Since 2006, Down Syndrome International (DSi) has coordinated an annual observance known as World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), held on 21 March (21/3) to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of chromosome 21 which causes the genetic condition Down syndrome.
The aim of this day is to raise awareness and understanding of a condition which affects approximately 1 in 800 births worldwide, and to promote the inherent rights of persons with Down syndrome to enjoy full and dignified lives and be active participants in their communities and society. Activities and events which take place on this day typically showcase the abilities and accomplishments of persons with Down syndrome and encourage independence, self-advocacy and freedom for persons with Down syndrome to make their own choices.
WDSD is observed by persons with Down syndrome and those who live and work with them in over 60 countries around the world in a variety of different ways, but with a common purpose, and the website www.worlddownsyndromeday.org provides an international forum for sharing experiences. Further information on WDSD is available on the DSi website here.
A draft resolution will be presented to the 66th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in October 2011, proposing that WDSD become a United Nations Observance Day with effect from 2012. If successful, this will greatly assist to raise the international profile of WDSD and awareness of the condition.
We request that you CLICK HERE to sign the petition, which we will then send to the United Nations so that its Member States are made aware of the global public support for this important initiative.
